As a court-certified interpreter for Albanian, I assume a crucial role in such proceedings: I ensure that every statement is translated precisely, completely, and neutrally \u2013 without judgment, interpretation, or omission. In the courtroom, it's not just about words. It's about freedom, responsibility, and justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Interpreting in criminal proceedings \u2013 utmost concentration required<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In criminal law, every detail often makes a difference. A single nuance can determine the understanding of a statement and thus the course of the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My duties as a court interpreter for Albanian include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consecutive interpreting during interrogations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whispered interpreting during the main trial<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interpreting statements from defendants, witnesses and victims<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interpreting between court, prosecution, defense and clients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is essential to have a firm command of both Albanian and German legal terminology. In addition to excellent language skills, sound knowledge of German criminal law and experience in using legal terminology are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially at the Tiergarten District Court, which is responsible for first-instance criminal proceedings in Berlin, it becomes clear every day how demanding this work is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Neutrality and confidentiality \u2013 cornerstones of our work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A court interpreter is not a consultant, a mediator, or an advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am solely committed to the linguistic translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No content evaluation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No explanation of legal strategies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No recommendations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strict confidentiality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidentiality is strictly enforced. The contents of negotiations must not be disclosed. This professional distance is essential, even though defendants or participants are often under considerable emotional strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Psychological stress and professional distance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criminal law sometimes deals with serious charges \u2013 from property offenses to violent crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an interpreter, you convey not only words, but often also emotions. It is therefore crucial to maintain professional distance while still interpreting accurately and completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The art of court interpreting lies in conveying content verbatim without becoming personally involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However, significantly higher requirements apply to working in court.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The profession of interpreter is not generally protected in Germany.<br>However, significantly higher requirements apply to working in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be employed at Berlin courts, the following points are required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swearing-in or general authorization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swearing-in or general authorization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>personal reliability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowledge of legal processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>absolute neutrality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially in criminal law, the wheat is quickly separated from the chaff. Faulty or inaccurate translations can have serious consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Linguistic precision between German and Albanian<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially with the language combination Albanian-German, specialist knowledge is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Differences in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Legal terms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural contexts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Procedural flows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Terminology from Albania, Kosovo or North Macedonia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They must be correctly categorized without altering the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A word-for-word translation is insufficient \u2013 \u200b\u200bnor is free interpretation permissible. What matters is legally precise equivalence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Court interpreters in Berlin \u2013 responsibility in the service of justice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a regularly employed interpreter for the Albanian language at the Tiergarten District Court and the Berlin I Regional Court, I see my role as building a linguistic bridge.
